Rugby sevens is fast-paced and combines athleticism and speed. It is played by two teams of seven people, each playing on a single field. The objective is to score points. Rugby sevens' rules are identical to those of rugby union. However the pitch is slightly smaller which allows for fewer tackles prior to turnover.

There are two types of rugby sevens. Forward and backward passing. Each team is composed of three forwards (the player who carries the ball and kicks it over the goal line), two backs and a scrumhalf. The scrum half is the link between forwards and backs. Each team can make five substitutions.

Each side has a unique strategy. Each side has its own strategy in rugby sevens. Teams that have possession of the ball have 30 seconds for scoring. If they fail, the other team has one minute. The team that scores can kick the ball either over the tryline, or over the crossbar.

Rugby sevens requires that players use their hands to pass the ball. However, players are only allowed to use their hands when they are within the ball's immediate vicinity. The lineout in sevens is not like rugby union.

Rugby sevens players are permitted to use the penalty box. A penalty box, which is located in the middle of the field, allows players to kick the ball and receive a penalty. After a penalty, the referee may give the team the yellow card. The referee can give the team yellow cards.

As with all sports, there are penalties and fouls. These are very similar in nature to the fouls and penalties in rugby union. Foul penalties result in a penalty kick for each team. Foul penalties are, for example, when a player touches the ball and it does not touch the ground, or if it is kicked beyond the goal line, it will be considered a foul.
